Long, Ira Dewey

Ira Dewey Long, 93, of Prices Fork died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. He was born in Prices Fork, on December 25, 1921, to the late Clarence and Roxie Price Long.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Edward, Clem, Hubert, Emmett, and Ralph Long; and three sisters, Lucinda Long Montgomery, Ora Long Tuck and Cordia Long Surface Linkous; and his son-in law, Jack Ridinger.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Price Long; daughter, Judy Long Ridinger; son, Ira Ronald Long all of Prices Fork; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Long and Verna Long; grandchildren, Scot Thomas of Blacksburg, Melissa Vaughn of Christiansburg; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Thomas, Liza Thomas, Mitchell Trollinger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ira served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #5311 in Christiansburg. He was a member of New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He retired from Hercules, Inc. in 1984 with over 40 years of service. Ira was very community and service oriented and was elected to four terms on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and served as Chairman for a portion of that time. For many years, he was very active in the Democratic Party and was a member of the Hunters Masonic Lodge #156.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 27, 2015, at 1 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Bansemer officiating. Interment will follow in the Zack Price/James R. Long Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Zack Price/James R. Long Cemetery, c/o Louise Saville, 1952 Brooksfield Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060 or the New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, c/o Donna Miller, 5201 Longshop Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
