Bosting, Jan Kurt

Jan K. Oosting, of Willis, Va., died peacefully at home on Sunday evening, December 28, 2008. He was born February 1938 in Durham. N.C., to Dr. Henry Oosting and Cornelia Oosting, of Durham, N.C. He was preceded in death by both his parents; and his son, Michael.

He is survived by his four daughters, Marikje Oosting Shreeve, of Bangor, Maine, Michelle Oosting Alexander, of Durham, N.H., Lisa Oosting Bessaoud, of Georgetown, Mass., and Andrea Oosting Clark, of Laporte, Texas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Jan completed his university studies at Duke University, Durham, N.C. After retiring from a career in teaching he pursued his love of music full time and distinguished himself in the folk music community as a scholar and performer in the Southern Appalachian music style. Jan was a well respected musician throughout the Floyd County area, the Eastern Seaboard and Ireland.

A memorial service is planned at his residence 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
