William Seymour (Buddy) McCoy, of McCoy, Va., former owner of McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Va., died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at Montgomery Regional Hospital, he was 76 years old.

His love for others lead him to become a licensed embalmer and funeral director, serving many folks from Blacksburg and the surrounding areas for almost 20 years. In 1976-1977 while attending Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, he received the Bill Pierce Award for professional attitude toward funeral service. Buddy was elected to the office of President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and served that office from 1994-1995, and was also a past president of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association from 1985-1986, which he proudly served.

Buddy was also President of the Blacksburg Kiwanis Club from 1982-1983 and served as Chairman of the Blacksburg United Way. He was a founding member of Community Christian Church and also the Long Shop-McCoy Volunteer Fire and Rescue in McCoy, Va. where he was named a lifetime member. Buddy was also an employee of Electro Tech for 25 years prior to becoming owner of McCoy Funeral Home from 1981-1996. In his spare time, Buddy had a love for farming and helping family and friends in cutting and baling hay. He relished the time he had on his John Deere tractor.

Preceding him in death was his parents, Emmett and Mary Lucas McCoy; his sister, Elizabeth Ann Albert; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oakley A. and Mary Elizabeth Lilly; a sister-in-law, Janet Lou Emma Lilly Knowles.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, June Lilly McCoy, of McCoy; two sons and spouses, Clifton Lee and Carrie Charlton McCoy, of Christiansburg, Leon Allen and Betsy Miller McCoy, of McCoy; two daughters and spouses, Vanessa Lou and Kenneth Homer McCoy, of McCoy, Rebecca Elizabeth and Mark Anthony Matusevich, of McCoy; seven grandchildren and spouses, Ross and Elizabeth Blount, Charlton and Brandy McCoy, Chad McCoy, Heather and Evan Shriver, Amanda and Shawn Cruise, Whitney Matusevich, and Katie Anne Matusevich; three great-grandchildren, Charles Brody Blount, Hunter Wayne Blount, and Peyton Kohl Cruise; a brother and sister-in-law, Beverly Wayne and Ruth Ann Edge McCoy, of Max Meadows; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Jean and Gene Martin, of Ruther Glen, Va., Hilda Mae and Tracy Walker, of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers-in-law and spouse, Sam Knowles, of Christiansburg, John Wayne and Anita A. Lilly, of Christiansburg; three aunts, Ruth McCoy, of McCoy, Racheal McCoy, of McCoy, and Emma Williams, of Pearisburg; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. England, Dr. Welch, and Dr. Payne and their staff, as well as caregivers, Carol Linkous, Vickie Kramel, Nancy Scott, and Tammy Kast for all of their care.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Community Christian Church, McCoy, with Mr. Jim Flaugher and the Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in the McCoy Family Cemetery, McCoy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Christian Camp at P.O. Box 428, McCoy, Va. 24111 or the Long Shop-McCoy Fire and First Aid, P.O. Box 489, McCoy, Va. 24111. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., Blacksburg.
