Maclachlan, Virginia Jane

Virginia Jane Grover Maclachlan passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015 at Kroontje Center, Warm Hearth, Blacksburg, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, LaMotte and Virginia Grover and her brother, Norman Grover.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen Maclachlan of Rochester, NY, daughter Marcy Davis of Christiansburg, son, Jeffrey Maclachlan and wife Venice of Nederland, CO., granddaughter, Maggie Davis of New York, NY, grandson, John Davis and wife, Alanna Thompson of Tucson, AZ. Also a sister-in-law, Anne Grover, nieces Jennifer Grover, Rebecca Verna, Sandra Mason and nephew Neal Grover, and a grand niece and four grand nephews.

Jane was born in Tarrytown, NY and graduated at the top of her class from Marymount College. She worked at Harvard University in biology research involving algae and its potential for ecological reclamation, and later worked as a museum docent at Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. Jane was a talented artist and musician, painting, sculpting, playing the violin and singing in choir. She was an animal lover, at one time raising collies and loved riding horses. She once placed third in a 100 mile endurance ride in Vermont. She had many special cats and small dogs throughout her life. Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed staying current on many topics and engaging in lively discussions with friends and family. She cared for her aging mother in Christiansburg for many years. Jane was activities director for Warm Hearth for years and was an active member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Lydia Circle, church choir and University Women’s Club.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Glade Community Church on Glade Rd. in Blacksburg on Sunday, March 8, at 2pm. There will be a reception afterward with the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Women’s Resource Center of NRV P.O. Box 477, Radford, VA. 24017 or the The Humane Society of Montgomery County P.O.
