Slater, Frances Lillian Smart

Frances Lillian Smart Slater, 87, of Radford, Va., died Sunday, October 5, 2008, at her home. She was born October 6, 1920, in Cowan (Belspring area), Va., to the late Joe and Ethel Smart. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Baldwin and Bill Slater; a son-in-law, Dick Hagy; a brother, Robert Smart; and a sister, Darlene Roop.

Surviving are a daughter, Joanne Baldwin Hagy, of Radford, Va.; a son, Jeffrey Slater and his wife, Brenda, of Herndon, Va.; a granddaughter, Robin Booker and her husband, Wayne, of Roanoke, Va.; and a grandson, Charlie Hagy, of Las Vegas, Nev. Also surviving are six sisters, Dolly Hedge, Shirley Crabtree, Moleta Boyd, June Dobbins, Lucille Wilson and Dorothy McCoy; and two brothers, Elwood Smart and Joe Smart Jr.

The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregiver, Bonnie Plaster. Frances called Bonnie her best friend. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2008, at West View Cemetery with the Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Ronald McDonald House, 2224 South Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va. 24014. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, Va.
