Smithers, Herman Donald

Herman Donald (Don) Smithers, 78, of Christiansburg, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

He was born November 22, 1929, in Charleston, W.Va., one of 14 children of the late Earl and Mabel B. Smithers. A graduate of West Virginia State, he was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retried employee of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 26 years of service.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister; eight brothers; and a son, Jamie Smithers. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Drema Smithers; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Johnny Martin; granddaughter and husband, Tracie and Rob Cook; grandson and wife, J.C. and Amelia Martin; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Shellie Cook; a brother, Jack Smithers, of Florida; and sisters, Pat Mick, of West Virginia, Sue Pusa, of Mississippi, and Betty Ruth Wolfe, of Missouri.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in the Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Matthew Kirkland officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, July 1, 2008, at the Horne Funeral Service.
