McNeil, John Thomas

John Thomas McNeil, 90, of Check, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2008. He was the youngest child of Thomas Benton and Florence Aldridge McNeil.

He was born July 23, 1917 in a two-story log house built by his grandfather. He was educated at Washington School, a one-room schoolhouse, about two miles from his home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings, Lelia, Minor, James, Garnie, Theodore, Clarence, Paul, Mary, and Rachel.

John lived and worked on the family farm all his life and also worked twelve years at Imperial Reading Corp., Christiansburg. He was an avid reader, a skilled woodworker, and a fine gardener.

He is survived by twenty-nine nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, Va., with the Rev. Glennard Quesenberry officiating. Burial will follow at McNeil Cemetery, Diamond Knob Road, Check, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2008 at Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, Va.
