Smith, John William
John William Smith, 67, of Fox Lane in Dublin, Va. died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Va.
Born in Thorpe, W.Va. March 8, 1941, he was the son of the late John Henry and Francis Elizabeth Rush Smith. John retired after 30 years of service with U.S. Steel last working in the mines as a fire boss. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a graduate of Gary High School. He was a member of the United Mine Workers and Christiansburg Moose Lodge #1470. He was formerly active in little league baseball serving as a coach while living in Gary. John was an avid fisherman and had been a resident of Dublin since 1999, moving there from Gary.
In addition to his parents, one brother, Thomas E. Smith, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Betty Lou Clemons Smith, of Dublin; one son, Charles William Smith and his wife, Amber, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Jennifer Marie Smith Fisher and her husband, Timothy, Jr., of Dublin; six grandchildren, Rachael Hayes and her fiance, Travis Thompson, Matthew Hayes, Kayla Hayes, Bailey Smith, Mason Smith and LeAnna Fisher; one great-grandson, Trevor Ray Thompson; one brother, Richard C. Parker and his wife, Faith, of Sebring, Fla.; three sisters, Linda Lou Gardner and her husband, Don, of Lake Michigan City, Mich., Sue O’Neal and her husband, Jim, of Gaston, N.C. and Nora Adams and her husband, Steve, of Princeton; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Clemons, of Princeton.
Crypt side services followed by entombment will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Woodlawn Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Bluewell. Pallbearers will be Little Stevie Adams, Pete Mitchem, Jake Parish, Matthew Hayes, Travis Thompson, Randall David, Tony Wilson, Steve Adams, Daniel E. Parker and Everett Frost.
Friends may call at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 1:30 p.m. to the service hour on Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Memorial contributions may be made to your local Humane Society. Immediately following the service family and friends will gather at the residence of his brother, 4383 Fox Lane in Dublin, VA.
Those attending the service are asked to be at the funeral home by 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton is serving the Smith family.
