Penn, Lucille Lester
Lucille Lester Penn, born June 14, 1914 in Christiansburg, Va. The fourth child born to the late John W. and Rosa Stewart Lester, she spent her early years on the campus of Christiansburg Institute and continued her education at Virginia State College, Petersburg, Va.
After becoming an educator, she married James F. Penn (deceased) and moved to Alexandria, Va. Long after formally leaving the classroom, her dedication to education continued through her service as the Dean of students at The Washington Saturday College, Washington, D.C., for which she earned an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.
Throughout her life “Aunt Lucille” made quite an impression on all that she encountered. She recently stated “at 91 years old, I could die at anytime; I could go to sleep and just not wake up.”
She went to sleep on March 12, 2006, leaving to cherish her memories an only nephew, John R. Lester (Sylvia), Richmond, Va.; a great-niece, Tammy Lester Woods (Michael), Salisbury, N.C.; and a host of other relatives; Pallbearers; Family Friends; Floral bearers; Members of First Agape Community of Faith.
We are grateful for the time we shared with Aunt Lucille. She lived a long and happy life, filled with intrigue. The memory of her will be forever etched in our hearts and minds. We thank each of you for all of your prayers and support during our bereavement. The Family
