Bodell, Dorothy Heavener

Dorothy Heavener Bodell, 76, of Blacksburg, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Blacksburg, Va., on July 27, 1931, to the late Charles Edward and Dorothy Ridinger Heavener. Dorothy was the author of several books, Journal articles and newspaper articles. She was an amateur historian and genealogist. She was employed at V.P.I. & S.U. Library for 25 years and retired in 1991. She was a member of the Dr. Harvey Black Chapter 174 of the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of the New River Historical Society, a life member of the Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a member of the Roanoke Civil War Round Table.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Nelson Bodell, of Blacksburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Pat Bodell, of Simpsonville, S.C., Arthur Bodell, of Blacksburg, and Lee Hugh and Valerie Bodell, of Johnson City, Tenn.; sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Paul Siburt, of Blacksburg; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Nan Heavener, of Blacksburg, and David and Helen Heavener, of Blacksburg; granddaughter, Katherine Bodell, of Roanoke, Va.; four nephews; and one niece.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, in the Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery Blacksburg. Friends may call anytime after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening, April 23, 2008, at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, S.W., Blacksburg, Va.
