Matthews, Edward Lee

Edward Lee Matthews, 73, of Staffordsville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 19, 2008, from Giles Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 20, 1934, at LaCrosse, Va., the son of the late Harry and Mary Matthews. He was a United States Army veteran and retired from the Richmond Health Department and the State of Virginia Health Department.

He is survived by his wife, Freda Stafford Matthews; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary M. and William C. Henderson, of Pearisburg, Katheryn M. and Rodney L. Croy, of Staffordsville; two granddaughters, Kelly and Amy Henderson, of Pearisburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and William Chidester, of Rich Creek (formerly of LaCrosse, Va.); two nephews, Richard L. Chidester and Gregory L. Robertson, of Pearisburg.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 21, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Thessalia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paula Campbell and Charles Henderson officiating. Graveside Military Rites will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, by Narrows V.F.W. Post #6000. Narrows American Legion Post #68 and Pembroke American Legion Post #311.

The family will receive friends Monday at Thessalia Methodist Church from 6 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be sent to Thessalia Methodist Church or Eaton’s Chapel Cemetery Fund. The A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, in charge of arrangements.
