Wingate, Melvin Ray

kinkade-soldier-shippingoutMelvin Ray Wingate, age 66, of Blacksburg died, Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. He was born in Wyhteville, Va. on October 6, 1947 to the late Carl and Mattie Vaught Wingate. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 and then stationed at the Pentagon until discharged in 1972.

He was employed by VDOT for 28 years as a surveyor and bridge inspector. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty P. Wingate, of Blacksburg, son and fiance, Jeffrey Wingate (Mary), of Radford, adopted daughter and fiance, Vicky Potter (Robert), of Roanoke, sister and brother-in-law, Karen Williams (Dr. James), of Piney Flats, TN., brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis Wingate (Sherry), of Rural Retreat, Chris Wingate (Ella), of Sugar Grove, Va., many special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11:00 am in the St. Michael Lutheran Church with the Pastor John Wertz, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the southwest Virginia Veteran Cemetery, Dublin, Va. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am – 11:00 am at St. Michael Lutheran Church. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
