Phillips, Carlysle

Carlysle Phillips, 88, of Willis, Va., passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem, Va., with his daughter and niece, Glenda Meador by his side. He had been in declining health for the past 11 years and seriously ill for the past six months.

He was born July 5, 1922, and was the last surviving sibling of 13 born to the late Andrew “Curtis” Phillips and Lena Duncan Phillips. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Glenna Reece Phillips on April 14, 1989, and his son-in-law, Taylor Rumley on December 3, 1998.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and was employed for many years by J. Freezer & Sons in Radford, Va. He enjoyed reading his Bible and discussing it and he accepted Christ on June 12, 2010. He also loved going to yard sales, bluegrass music, playing his banjo, and all types of animals and nature.

Surviving is his daughter, Joyce R. Rumley, of Martinsville, Va.; and his beloved cat “Socks”. Also surviving are his “grand-dogs” Rascal and Penny Jo Rumley and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members. The brothers and sisters preceding him in death were Dovie Hall, Terry Phillips, Edgar Phillips, Ola Harris, Huger Phillips, Bernice Mitchell, Martin W. Phillips, Victor Phillips, Wyatt Phillips, June Dale Phillips, and an infant brother and sister.

Special thanks go to his sister-in-law, Mozell Phillips; his nephew, George Phillips; his friend, Philip Weddle, and caregiver Cindy Gray for all they did to enable him to remain in his home as long as he did. To his numerous faithful nieces and nephews who visited him in the hospital and the Rehab Center; the employees and staff of Unit 4 of the Salem Health and Rehab Center for their loving care; and the staff and doctors in SICU, SDU, 4J and 4H of the Veterans Hospital, for their special care and concern.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jim Steele and Pastor Norman Goad officiating. Interment will be in the Reece Family Cemetery in Dugspur, Va., with Military Rites by the V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010 at the Maberry Funeral Home, 367 South Locust Street, Floyd Va.
