Roop, James Shelburn

James S. Roop, 81, of Riner, died, Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Our beloved Poppy was born in Roanoke, Va. on January 25, 1927, to the late Millard Harvey and Lilly Dove Agnew Roop.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Lee Roop. Jim will always be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. He cherished his quiet moments, reading and bird watching, as well as time spent with his family and pets. Jim spent two years serving the Air Force in a search and rescue squadron in Alaska. His 30 year postal career began as a Railway Postal Clerk and ended as a rural mail carrier.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Bishop Roop, of Riner; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Page Warner, of Blacksburg, and Sherri and Mark Carper, of Radford; seven grandchildren, Jared Stilwell, Wes Warner and wife, Carla, Shane Warner, Tegan, Briana, Moriah and Tess Carper; great-grandchild, Cameron Warner; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Christine and Fred Saunders, of Christiansburg, Jane and Kenneth Altizer, of Christiansburg; sister-in-law, Rubye Caldwell, of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, in the Auburn United Methodist Church with the Rev. Katherine Hale officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad Riner Station, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073, or the Auburn United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 74, Riner, Va. 24149.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday evening, March 7, 2008, at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg, Va.
