Bishop, Halsey Luther

Halsey Luther Bishop, 89, of Pulaski and formerly of Pearisburg, passed away peacefully Monday, February 25, 2008, at his home.

He was born December 9, 1918, in Radford, and was the son of the late Lula Moore Bishop and Halsey Bishop. He served two years with the United States Navy aboard the Battleship USS Nevada (BB36) from 1944 to 1946, and was active in two battles at the invasion of Normandy and Southern France on D-Day, and also saw action in the Pacific at Ulitha, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He won five battle stars, two in the Atlantic and three in the Pacific before retiring from the Navy with an honorable discharge in 1946.

After the war, Mr. Bishop returned to Pearisburg, Va., and resumed work at Celanese Corporation of America where he retired after 42 years as a Production Supervisor. He was the owner of Cedar Crest Farm in Staffordsville where he raised cattle for 21 years. Mr. and Mrs. Bishop were members of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, and later at the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski. He was an active member of the American Legion and a Lifetime member of the VFW.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Louise Swaim Bishop; two sisters, Thelma Rogers and Doris Simone; and three brothers, Floyd, Arnold and Fred Bishop. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Terry Maultsby, of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons and daughtersin-law, Donald L. and Margaret Bishop, of Salem, and Alan D. and Penny Bishop, of Danville; six grandsons, Paul Phlegar and his wife, Linda, of Atlanta, and Andy Phlegar and his wife, Raelyn, of Kennesaw, Ga., Keith Bishop and his wife, Ellen, of Port Orchard, Wash., Kevin Bishop and his wife, Allyson, of Salem, Bradly Bishop, of Richmond, and Jeffry Bishop, of Duck, N.C.; and six greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 29, 2008, at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore and the Rev. Fred Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Radford.
