McDaniel, Grover Douglas

Grover Douglas McDaniel, 68, passed away at his home in the Shiloh Community on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, after a long illness.

He was born on June 6, 1939, in Pulaski, to Archie Lee and Eva J. Rucker McDaniel. He was preceded in death by his three children, daughter, Lisa Ellen McDaniel Roop; and sons, Stephen Douglas and Mark McDaniel; his parents; and his brothers, Archie Lee Jr. and Edward W. McDaniel.

Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Linda Ellen Hash McDaniel; grandsons, C. Aaron Roop and his wife, Elizabeth, Ethan Trevor McDaniel and his mother, Angela Pruitt McDaniel Hinkle; sisters, “Susie” Mary Miller, Yonna Graham and her husband, Don, and Lynn Paris and her husband, Fred; many nieces, nephews and in-laws; including mother-in-law, Lorraine Hash; and longtime friends, Rudolph Morris and Jeff Bowman.

Known as “Doug” by family and “Grover” by most of his friends, he served in the Army in Germany after graduation from high school. Upon his return, he worked a short time at Pulaski Furniture. When he went to work at Klopman Mills as a loom fixer, he found his career -fixing things. Doug and his brother Eddie then formed an excavating company that continued for a few years, after which he worked for Radford Army Ammunition Plant for 13 years as a mechanic. He then worked for New River Castings for four years, again as a mechanic, before retiring due to illness.

Doug was a lifelong member of Dublin Presbyterian Church and a member of the Henry Clay Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed being a “shade tree mechanic” who was always ready and willing to fix a car or even a sewing machine. He was loved by all, bur most especially his devoted wife, Linda, who cared for him selflessly throughout his illness.

Visitation will be at Stevens Funeral Home on Friday, February 22, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. followed by a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008, from Stevens Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe McCoy officiating, Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va.
