Porterfield, Lydia Christine
Lydia Christine (Maw Maw) Porterfield, faithful wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, 82, of the Maybrook Community at Pembroke, passed away quietly Monday, January 28,2008 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg.
Born September 21, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert A and Kate Elizabeth Dowdy Lucas. She married the love of her life, Noble Dewey Porterfield, August 26, 1947 and they were by each others side for 56 years, until his death April 19, 2004. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Leona and Josephine Lucas, and Helen Tawney; four brothers, Alva, Bill, Tom, and Walter Lucas; and by two nephews, Marvin Tawney and Nelson Lucas. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New River Ward, in Pembroke and with her husband had been sealed in the Washington, D.C. Temple.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Micky) Porterfield, of the home, whom she cared for lovingly and completely until the end, and Rochelle and Allen Breeding, of Maybrook; one grandson, her pride and joy, Allen Dewey “Henry” Breeding, also of Maybrook; one brother and sister-in-law, Howard Andrew and Yvonne Lucas, of Craig Co.; her sisters-in-law, Lida B. Lucas and Mabel Lucas, of Newport, Ola Lucas, of Blacksburg, and Jean Porterfield, of Charlotte, N.C.; her life-long best friend, Louise Tawney Harvey, of Newport; her very special nieces, Jeannie Williams, Carolyn “Perk” Woodson, Michelle and Cassidy Raines, and Lynn Montgomery; a special nephew and neighbor, Bobby Joe and his wife, Debbie Tawney; and numerous nieces nephews, and cousins.
Maw Maw is also survived by a complete “adopted” family, Dorothy Page, of Peterstown, W.Va., Carrie Spicer, of Newport, the men and women at Carilion Patient Transport (Giles Division), whom she considered to be her boys and girls, and by her bingo buddy Brenda Williams.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Parish and the wonderful nurses on the fourth floor at Montgomery Regional Hospital for their loving and tender care for Mom during her brief illness. Special thanks also to Lynn Montgomery, Michelle Raines, and Tracie Smith for their love and support during this difficult time, which will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 1, 2008, at The Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street, Pembroke, with Bishop Cantrall Martin presiding. Burial will follow in the Lucas Cemetery at Newport.
