Stevenson, Luthur Cecil

Luthur Cecil Stevenson, 85, of Camden, S.C., died Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Born in Christiansburg, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph Luther Stevenson and Mary Magdaline Chafin Stevenson.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and received two Bronze Battle Stars, a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Good Conduct Medal. He retired in 1984, after 34 years from DuPont. He enjoyed carpentry and Virginia Tech’s Hokie Football. What he cherished most was spending time with his son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Mr. Stevenson was a member of First Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class #6. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 17.

He was predeceased by a son, Ronald Cecil Stevenson. Surviving are his son, Larry Joseph Stevenson and his wife, Karen, of Camden, S.C.; brother, William R. Broce and his wife, Sally, of Maryville, Calif.; sisters, Mildred Burke, of Christiansburg, Va., and Fern Hartmann, of Roanoke, Va.; and a grandson, Clinton Joseph Stevenson.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Reverend Bruce Hancock and the Rev. Jimmy Atkerson will officiate. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, S.C. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 17.
