Chickering, Helen Stuart Munn

Helen Stuart Munn Chickering, 93, of Blacksburg, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2008, after a brief illness. She was born July 22, 1914, in Ellettsville, Ind., to William Stuart Munn and Ella Lou Swiegert Munn. Her husband of 43 years, Roberts Chickering, as well as her parents and two brothers, preceded Helen in death.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Risen and her husband, Patrick, of Blacksburg; her son, William Chickering and his wife, Sharon, also of Blacksburg; two grandsons, Clay Risen, of Washington, D.C., and Michael Risen and his wife, Meg, of Nashville, Tenn.; and her sister, Ann Norman, of Louisville, Ky.

Helen was an avid community volunteer in McLean, Va., Louisville, Ky., and Blacksburg, Va. She enjoyed sewing, painting, traveling and most of all, reading a good book. Helen will be remembered by her bright smile, boundless energy, and willingness to try anything once.

Thanks to doctors, nurses, CNAs and other staff in the emergency room and on the 4th floor of Montgomery Regional Hospital for their compassionate care of Helen during her recent time there.

Visitation will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008. Interment will be in St. Johnsbury, Vt., next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Montgomery County Christmas Store, 30 West Main St., Christiansburg, Va. 24073.
