Yancy Raymond Lafon, 84, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2006.

He was born in Kire, Va. on June 10, 1921. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific Theatre from 1941 to 1945, he re-enlisted and served from 1945 until 1947 as Military Police in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He received the Purple Heart with two clusters, a Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Infantrymen Badge, American Defense, and was a Patrol Leader and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He was with the 3rd Battalion, and the 27th Infantry Division.

He was a life member of the D.A.V. Post 29 in Christiansburg. He retired from the Town of Blacksburg in 1985 as maintenance leader. He made many friends there.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Furrow Lafon of Newport; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas E. and Barbara J. Lafon of Willis; two sisters, Faye Logan of Roanoke, Eula Martin of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 24, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Lee Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call anytime after 12 noon Thursday, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 144, Newport, Va. 24128 or the Newport Fire Department, 716 Blue Grass Trail, Newport, Va. 24128.
