Akers, Wayne Edward

A native of Christiansburg, Virginia, Wayne Edward Akers; born October 31, 1960, peacefully left this world on June 21, 2024, at the age of 63.

Wayne was preceded in death by his mother, Christine D. (Burke) Akers. Survivors include his wife of 29 years Tanya (Wojciechowski) Akers, and children; Brian Mullins, Stephanie (Derrick) Boyd, Stacy (Shep) Millar, Tyler (Amanda) Marcum, James (Maegan) Akers, Shannon (Josh) Collins, Breana (Zach) McManamy, along with 14 grandchildren, Father JC Akers and sister Joetta Whitehurst. Wayne was a devoted father, husband, cousin, and friend to many. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement no matter what challenges they were facing.

Wayne graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1979, he went on to attend New River Valley Community College where he obtained a degree in Instrumentation. Wayne furthered his education at Virginia Western Community College where he received another degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. Wayne worked for Siemens Technology for 36 years and was an indispensable member of their team. He was known for his brilliant mind, endless curiosity, great accomplishments, and his willingness to share it all with those around him.

He loved to hike, forage, cave, can, fish, garden, camp, and spend time with his beloved family. He was loved by many and had an unforgettable impact on those around him. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work and dedication to helping others and has played a huge role in serving his community. Wayne served 23 years with the Longshop McCoy Fire and Rescue squad and was Chairman of the NRV Swiftwater Association. At 62 years old, Wayne recertified in technical rescue in one of his favorite places, the New River. Anyone who met him was blessed to meet a friend. He never failed to recite a dad joke whenever he could. He loved to tell amazing stories about his childhood or his outrageous caving stories. “Always told best by a campfire.”

There’s no short way of explaining this man and the impact he has had on everyone; his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. A special thanks to the countless friends and special family members who have supported Wayne and his family during this time. A visitation for friends and family will be held at Longshop McCoy Fire/Rescue at 5770 McCoy Rd Blacksburg, VA from 5 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, June 25th. The funeral will also be held at Longshop McCoy Fire/Rescue at 11 am on Wednesday, June 26th, Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Join us to celebrate the life of such an amazing man and the time he spent among us.
