Nixon, Doris Pugh

Doris Pugh Nixon, 88, of Christiansburg peacefully passed surrounded by loving family on January 6, 2024. Doris was born in Floyd, Virginia on October 7, 1935 to Ottis Pugh Sr. and Ola Sowers Pugh. She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Henry Wilmon Nixon, her parents; two older brothers, Ted and Randall Pugh; and brother and sister-in-law, George Grover and Opal Nixon.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Nixon Ganoe and son-in-law, Mike Ganoe, and her grandchildren, Jeremiah Ganoe, Callie Kiser, and Marshall Kiser, all of Radford. She is also survived by her brother, Ottis Pugh Jr. and sister-in-law, Loretta Pugh of Christiansburg; sister-in-law, Barbara Pugh of Rhode Island; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Nixon of California. Also left to cherish her memory are many cousins, nephews and nieces that she loved dearly.

Doris lived most of her married life in Christiansburg where she served for the Montgomery County School system for many years as payroll clerk and in later years, the secretary at a Christiansburg High School.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She left her grandchildren with so many wonderful memories of fishing and picnics on Little River, playing ball in the basement, and so many more memories too numerous to count. She attended every activity with her grandchildren from Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to their races at the drag strip. They were her pride and joy.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 10 from 4-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home, 1300 North Franklin Street, in Christiansburg. The funeral will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 West Main Street, Christiansburg on Thursday, January 11 at 1p.m. with Mike Derflinger officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg.

Special thanks to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living in Radford for their love and support over the last two years. Special thanks to Medi Health Hospice for their care and support as well.
