Simpkins, Herbert Bently
Herbert Bently Simpkins, 83, of Christiansburg, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2023, at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery. Herbert was loved by his family and many friends. His life reflected his meek and gentle spirit.
His life’s mission was to be there for his loved ones, even when it meant self-sacrifice. Herbert’s life personified the words of Jesus’ in John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his brother.”
Herbert’s generous spirit was matched only by his humility, never seeking or desiring any recognition. He loved animals and cared faithfully for his dog Bud and his two cats Midnight and Angel.
As an employee, and later owner/operator, of Angle Florist in Christiansburg for over 30 years, Herbert worked tirelessly to provide each customer with personalized attention. His resolve to please his customers resulted in many lifelong, trusted friends who came to depend upon Herbert’s loyal service.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents Ellis and Mildred Simpkins, sister Shelby Roberts, and brother-in-law Bobby Roberts. He is survived by his brothers; Sam Simpkins (Peggy) of Radford, Travis Simpkins (Gail) (Travis passed away 36 hours after Herbert), Nelson Simpkins (Deborah), and Don Simpkins, all of Christiansburg; sisters, Linda Smith (Bob), Riner, Teresa Davis, Christiansburg, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.
To honor Herbert’s wishes the family will have a private graveside service at Sunset Cemetery on Saturday, October 21, with Jeremy Rasor and Gabriel Graham officiating.

When I think if Herbert the first thought in my mind is what a soft spoken gentle man. Then comes caring and compassion. Simple words yes! But… so true. Our community has lost a special man. Without a doubt Herbert is walking those streets of gold. Our condolences to his family. I know he was special to you all. Keep those memories close they will carry you through the days ahead. Sending our love to Sammy, Nelson, Teresa, Linda and Donnie (Sorry Don we go to far back it. I just love you as Donnie) Johnny and Phyllis Meredith
