Reed, James

James (Jim) Reed of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on September 27th, 2023, at the age of 83. Jim was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to a wonderful family. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Reed, his mother Quincy Cox Reed, sister Mary Ellen Reed, and brother Junior Reed, all of Riner, Virginia.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Beulah Reed; sons Chris Reed and wife Shana, Phil (Dee) Reed, and wife Darlene, Bobby Reed and wife Denise, and Randall (Scott) Reed and girlfriend Kelly Hinkley. Jim was a proud PawPaw to Axton Reed, Jacob Reed, Sam Reed, Travis Reed, Kayla Comer, Emilee Carden, Derick Linkous, Halley Stanley, and Madison Stanley; great-grandchildren, Hadleigh, Elana, and Stanley. Also left to cherish his memory are Jim’s brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Dale and Norma (Colleen) Bragg, Ken and Shelba Baker, and Debbie Gilmer; special longtime friend (son) Bobby Phillips, wife Tanya, and daughter Brady. Other special longtime friends include Sandra Sanchez, Linda Hilton, and James Wickline as well as many special nieces and nephews.

Jim was honored to serve in the United States Army Reserve from 1963 to 1969 as a rifle marksman and cooks’ apprentice. He was employed at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant for 36 ½ years before retiring in 2003. Jim not only loved his family, but he also truly enjoyed farming, carpentry, and gardening, and took pride in working to provide for his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life as he adored teaching, holding, and playing along with them. Jim spent his life not only providing for his family, but also by showing his boys a solid work ethic and how to be strong, supportive, and responsible men. He would regularly say, “You’ll have a family of your own one day, and I won’t always be around.” Jim was a genuine man that would help anyone and was a stranger to no one; he was a proud and faithful family man that will be missed dearly by family and friends.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Carilion Hospice Nurses, Robin, Kelly, Sarah, and Rebecca for the outstanding care they provided for Jim.
