Whitaker, Charlie Cadell

Charlie Cadell Whitaker, born November 5, 1927, passed peacefully into eternity on Monday, November 27 at his home in Point of Rocks, Maryland after a short illness. He was 96 years old.

Charlie was born in McCoy, Virginia to Sidney Adrick and Elisabeth Albert Whitaker and lived most of his life in the McCoy and Blacksburg area, save for a two-year period spent serving his country in the US Air Force and the last ten plus years in Maryland with his daughter Debbie and son-in-law Jim.

Charlie spent most of his life serving the community of Blacksburg as a barber alongside his brother Cecil, working together for over 50 years at the Star Barber Shop and then the Modern Barber Shop which the two purchased and managed together. Charlie enjoyed the camaraderie of those he had the pleasure of cutting hair for, gardening, woodworking, road trips with neighbors Danny and Martha, antiquing with his wife and best friend, Frances, and helping anyone who had a need. He had a true servant’s heart. Probably his greatest love in life was his family, both immediate and extended. Charlie was a faithful believer and spent his adult years attending Community Christian Church in McCoy, Virginia and then Church of Christ at Manor Woods in Rockville, Maryland. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and lived his life as a testimony to that love.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Sidney and Elisabeth and his step-mother Lettie Jane; brothers Cecil, Clifford, Carmen, Carson and their wives and baby brother Calvin; his mother and father-in-law, Josh and Stella Fain who were like parents to him; granddaughter-in-law Anna; only son, Steven Cadell Whitaker and his beloved childhood sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Frances Fain Whitaker.

Charlie is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Jim MacConnell; daughter-in-law Helen Whitaker; six grandndchildren, Steven Whitaker (Kelli), Jamie Whitaker, Erin Schaeberle (Tom), Mindy Adams (Dan), Heather MacConnell and Meredith MacConnell; seven great-grandchildren. Steven Whitaker III, Alycia Whitaker, Sidney Whitaker, Logan Schaeberle, Asher Adams, Ari Adams and Charlie Jane Adams as well as one great-great grandchild, Edgar Whitaker, his baby sister Barbara McMahan, sister-in-law Carolyn Whitaker and many nieces and nephews.

Charlie’s life and memory will be with us that loved him always. After living 85 years in McCoy and Blacksburg he bravely moved to Maryland and brought a sense of “home” with him, to live and love, making new friends and becoming “dad” and “grandpa” to so many there. We who were privileged to know and love Charlie will miss his wisdom, country humor, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, generosity and love of life.
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same.” ~ quote attributed to Flavia Weedn

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 AM before the service.
