Cox, Virginia Hunting

Virginia Lee Hunting Cox passed away on April 4, 2023. She was 82 years of age, being born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 19, 1940.

She was predeceased by her fraternal grandparents, Lewis Morgan Hunting and Etta Tabitha Aldrich Hunting, and her maternal grandparents Claude Filmore Bishop and Violet Irene Vos Bishop, her parents George Marvin Hunting and Barbara Virginia Bishop Hunting Page, and brother George John Hunting. She was also predeceased by her husband and best friend Walter E. (Wally) Cox.

She graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Michigan, and was also a graduate of George Mason University. She spent most of her life volunteering and serving on many boards and president of many others. Virginia served as president of the following organizations: The Washington and Lee Law Wives, The Junior Women’s Club of Charlottesville, VA, the AAUW Branch in Bedford, VA, the Women’s Club of Bedford, the Bedford Hospital Auxiliary, the Bedford Area Family YMCA Thrift Shop which she helped organize, The Blacksburg Newcomers and the Chautauqua Opera Guild, Chautauqua, NY, P.E.O. Chapter AU (Philanthropic Educational Organization). She also served several times on the Board of the Episcopal Cottage of Chautauqua, NY. She had a very rich and full church life, usually being a member of an Episcopal Church and serving on the altar guilds of several of those churches.

Virginia and her husband spent many years doing genealogy research on their families which included much travel to visit the cities and homes of many of their ancestors.

Virginia and her husband were both active in the Little Town Players of Bedford, VA. Her forte was running the box office, raising funds, and sometimes dressing a set and occasionally was on stage. Her favorite role was Ethel in “On Golden Pond”. Virginia and her husband spent many summers at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY. They loved to introduce friends and family to this cherished Life Long Learning place. Virginia served on the Chautauqua Opera Guild Board, was President for two years and served on the Scholarship Committee of the Chautauqua Women’s Club.

Virginia and her husband spent a great deal of time traveling to all 50 States and many countries. After Wally died her new traveling companion was a childhood friend who was also a widow. Virginia loved to read and was a member throughout the years of several different book clubs. She was always in a bridge club and always told everyone she played “talking bridge”! More recently she joined a Mahjong group and enjoyed learning a new game. Many of her friends have samples of her needlework, either counted cross stitch, knitting, or needlepoint, She hopes ya”ll saved them! Virginia thanks her many friends for making her life so full and rich, She leaves her family and friends with many stories of her adventures and mishaps, when you feel low, just think of one, and it will surely make you laugh again.

Virginia leaves behind to celebrate her life— two children: Deanna Lynn Cox, son-in-law F. Hal Brown, grandson Eli E. Brown, and son Leonard C. Cox. She also leaves her two sisters: Patricia Jo Hunting Hendricks Smith and brother-in-law Fred Smith, Sandra Ann Hunting Peters Peters, brother-in-law Nolan Peters and Her Brother’s wife, Denni Don Hunting. She also leaves behind her favorite cousins, Lesley Wells Gallatin and Bill Wells, and many nieces, nephews, and a host of good friends.

Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Church St. NE, Blacksburg, VA on April 22, 2023, at 1:00 pm with a reception following. A private inurnment will be at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford, VA at a later date.
