Whorley, Joan Christoff
Joan C. Whorley, age 76, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV. Born January 13, 1947, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Gertrude Rhinefield Christoff.
Joan grew up in Highland Falls, NY, in a small village near West Point Military Academy. She enrolled in Sacred Heart Catholic School until 8th grade, and then attended Highland Falls High School. She worked at Bear Mountain Inn through her school years and after completing high school. Joan met Jim in 1969 and married him in 1970. They moved to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia in 1971, where she continued to live and raise three children with Jim. She completed a degree in business accounting from Bluefield State College in 2001, and worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bluefield, VA. After the children had grown and left home, she and Jim started their cruising journey. Altogether, they have enjoyed 25 cruises, including a transatlantic maiden voyage. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Allen Whorley; one sister, Ginny Elliott; and two brothers, Albert and Ricky Christoff. Survivors include her loving husband, James A. “Jim” Whorley of Peterstown, WV; one son, Greg Whorley of Portland, OR; one daughter, Greta Dunn and husband Billy of Farmville, VA; four brothers, John Christoff and wife Maureen of Island Falls, NY, Mike Christoff and wife Linda of Crestview, FL, Jim Christoff and wife Annie of Fort Montgomery, NY, and Robert Christoff and wife Linda of Kennesaw, GA; two sisters, Patsy Curry and husband Robert of Gulf Breeze, FL, and Kay Weyer and husband Vinny of Island Falls, NY; and two grandchildren, Alex Dunn and Braden Dunn.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00PM on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Father Sebastian Devasya officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Memorial Gardens in Lindside, WV. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
