Haney, William C.
William C. (Bill) Haney, 88 of Pulaski, died Saturday May 5, 2007. Bill was born October 8, 1918 in Marion, NC and was the son of the late Ralph Lee Haney and Lola Hoppes Haney. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in 1980. He served in World War II from March 1944 until November 1945, and was in the 4th Marine Division that fought in the battle of Iowa Jima for 36 days.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1184 in Pulaski, The American Legion and the Pulaski Moose Lodge where he was a Pilgrim in the Virginia Moose Association and a charter member of the Pulaski Moose Lodge since 1964 and was Past Governor. He was an avid baseball fan and attended all of the Pulaski games when his health permitted. He tested his baseball skills by playing for Virginia Maid Hosiery Mill and Virginia Oak Flooring beginning in 1937.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Minnie Smith Yeckley, a brother Ralph L. Haney, Jr., and a sister Ruby H. Draper. He is survived by his wife, Bernice L. Haney of Pulaski: a son; Jerry E. Haney of Clearwater, FL: a daughter; Connie H. Lauro of Raleigh, NC: a brother; Denver “Mutt” Haney of Roanoke: two sisters; Ladema “Dickie” Hinchee of Salem, and Alene H. “Dockie” Anderson of Pulaski: Step-children; Anita Chrisley of Pulaski, James E. “Eddie” Jones of Clifton Forge, and Frederic “Ricky” Jones of Pulaski. Also survived by six grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 9, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at SEAGLE Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Visiting will be Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials can be made to the V.F.W. Post 1184 in Pulaski, Va.
