Mattox, William Thomas

William “Bill” Thomas Mattox, age 88, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 27, 2014, at his home. He was born in Giles County, Virginia on March 12, 1925 to the late Pearl Chapman and Luzena Harvey Mattox. Bill had been a devoted Christian, and an active member of the Blacksburg Church of God and the Slussers Chapel Church of God for over 50 years. He was a Veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army, and was captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a prisoner of war in Stalag 11B for over six months. Upon his return home, he worked for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and Corning Glass Works. He was known as the “Basket Man” around Blacksburg, for his handmade creations. He is survived by his wife, Alice Marie Mattox, of Blacksburg, two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron Mattox (Diane) , of Alexandria, Louisiana, Rick Mattox (Barbara), of Blacksburg, seven grandchildren, Brian Mattox (Mary Lee), Bill Mattox, Scott Mattox, Katy Mattox, Paige Mattox, Peter Mattox, and Molly Mattox, one great-grandchild, Luke Mattox, brothers, James H. Mattox (Tincie), of McCoy, Daniel Mattox, of Salem, IN., sister-in-law Marguerite Mattox, of Fruitland Parks, FL., brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charlie and Jacque Akers, of Blacksburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. David Ansley, and Rev. Richard Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am-1:00 pm Saturday, at McCoy Funeral Home.
