barnett melvin vassieMelvin Vassie Barnett, age 87, of Blacksburg died Monday, January 13, 2014 at New River Valley Medical Center. He was born in Blacksburg, VA on January 10, 1927 to the late Tosh Evans and Bertha Sheppard Barnett. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Minnie Jones Barnett; second wife, Rubel Graham Barnett; his brothers, Edward T. Barnett and Archie A. Barnett; three sisters, Clara Belle Pearman, Verna Mae Noonkester, Beatrice B. Pearman; and a granddaughter, Rebecca E. Sullivan. He was a lifetime member of the Prices Fork United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations on Okinawa, Japan. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and George Sullivan; one son and daughter-in-law, Melvin “Butch” and Pat Barnett all of Prices Fork; five granddaughters, Katherine S. Booth (Rick), Jennifer S. Brotherton (Brian), Elizabeth S. Scott (Clay), Melanie B. Poff (Lee), Monica B. Evers; ten great grandchildren, Hannah, Erin, Emma, Daniel, Isaac, Rachel, Elania, Zander, Eli, Nathan; special cousin, LeeRoy Barnett. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Prices Fork United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gustavo Segovia and Rev. Harry Kennon officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Prices Fork United Methodist Church, 3365 McCoy Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
