Shorter, Ira Dwight

Ira Dwight Shorter, 80, of Radford, passed away at his home on December 14, 2013. Dwight was born on October 21, 1933 to the late Ira Smith and Hazel Vickers Shorter. He is preceded in death by his stepfather, Robert H. Bryant; and his sister-in-law, Joyce S. Bryant. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Doretta Akers Shorter; a brother, Buddy Bryant; two sons, Jay (Judy H.) Shorter of Radford, and John Scott (Paula) Shorter of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren and spouses, Christopher and Alysha Shorter of Dublin, Devin Shorter of Radford, John, Ellie, and Isabell Shorter of Kansas City, Mo., Ken and Lori Keister of Radford, and Matt Keister of Radford; and great-grandchildren, Grant and Jacqueline Keister. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at DeVilbiss Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 with a funeral service to directly follow at DeVilbiss Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Jerry Gibson and Jimmy Walker officiating. Entombment will be private at Highland Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dwight’s honor to the Carilion Clinic Hospice-New River Valley (701 Randolph Street, Suite 110, Radford, VA 24141). The family would like to thank the many special friends and caregivers who helped Dwight during his time of sickness, especially Sarah Meredith Young and Meredith Doss.
