Montgomery, Archie Franklin

Archie Franklin Montgomery, 76, of Blacksburg, died Monday, December 9, 2013 after a brief illness. He was born June 5, 1937, to the late Lucinda Long and Barney G. Montgomery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Jeannie Montgomery; brothers-in-law, Eugene Price and David Price; and sister-in-law, Alice Noonkester. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Nina Mabel Price Montgomery; daughter, Jennifer Montgomery of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Eric Peterson of Stafford, VA; and granddaughters, Delaney and Olivia Peterson. Also surviving are sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Don Saville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Faye Montgomery; Curtis and Judy Montgomery; sisters-in-law, Cindy Price and Jane Rios, as well as a number of wonderful nieces and nephews. Archie completed the 4-year machinist apprenticeship program at NASA’s Langley Research Center, Hampton VA. While there he made parts that were used in NASA’s early spaceships. He retired from Virginia Tech as a machinist in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. He was a veteran, having proudly served in the U.S. Navy. Archie was a long-time member of New Mount Zion Lutheran Church. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling, golfing, riding his motorcycle, playing his harmonica, and especially spending time with his daughters, son-in-law, and granddaughters. His laughter was infectious, and he always enjoyed a good “belly-laugh”. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Archie’s name to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter or the New Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery where he spent many hours working to maintain and improve the cemetery. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 12, at 2:00 pm in the New Mount Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Bansemer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, VA.
