Coles, Mary Alice

coles mary aliceMary Alice Coles, 85, of Roanoke and formerly of Radford, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. Mary Alice was born to the late Fred and Cora Murphy on July 19, 1928. She was also preceded in death by a loving husband, Charlie L. Coles Sr. and three brothers. Mary joined First Baptist Church (Radford) at an early age. She loved serving the Lord and others, and had a deep love for her church family. Mary served as a member of the Deaconess Board, Bereavement Committee and the Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Twin City Garden Club. She was employed as a substitute teacher in the Radford City School System. She later went on to work at Radford University, retiring from there as a supervisor of residential facilities after 30 years of service. Mary leaves to cherish her memory three children, Martha Ann Bishop (James), of Severna Park, Md., Rhonda Johnson (Donald), of Roanoke, and Charlie Coles Jr. (Della), of Kernersville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Gerri Crenshaw (James), James Bishop Jr. (Mauri), Stephen Bishop (Serena), Keith Bishop (Malea), Shakir Johnson, Shawn Johnson, Angela Lee (William), Billy Adams, Tisha Gibbs (Aaron) and Ashleigh Coles; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Murphy (Maxine); one sister, Ann M. Johnson (Percy); sisters-in-law, Harrietta Saunders, Hazel Coles, Ollie Gravely, Julia Mills, Ernestine Murphy and numerous other relatives. The family wishes to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their care and support. The Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at First Baptist Church, 555 West Rock Road, Radford, VA with Rev. C. Coles Casey officiating and Rev. James A. Bishop, Eulogist. Interment will be in Sunrise Burial Park, Fairlawn, VA. There will be visitation at the church from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.
