Jones, Robert Phlegar
Robert Phlegar Jones, of Blacksburg, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Rev. Robert Phlegar Jones was born the third child of the late John W. and Mary Lucy Saunders Jones on August 10, 1917 in Cambria. In 1955, he and the late Thelma Trussell Jones were married. He attended the Hill School and on July 14, 1942, he was drafted and inducted in the United States Army. Rev. Jones served in the Army for three years, three months and 17 days; he was discharged in 1945. For his service during World War II, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal. Rev. Jones was baptized at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church in 1930. He later joined First Baptist Church in Blacksburg in 1962. Rev. Jones felt the call into the ministry and gave his trial sermon in 1978 at First Baptist Church where he became an Associate Minister. Loved by many, he has served at many churches as a guest minister. Funeral arrangements are being entrusted to Penn’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Funeral Services will be on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, Rev Lee Suggs, Sr., Pastor and Rev. Ron Parker, Eulogist. Interment will be at Southwest Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery, Dublin, Virginia.
