Seagle, Sr., Cloyd DuVal
Cloyd DuVal Seagle, Sr., age 98 of Pulaski, died Thursday at Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on August 4, 1915 in Pulaski, and was the son of the late Blanche Hurst Seagle and Thomas Mason Seagle. DuVal graduated from Pulaski High School in 1933 and continued his education at Fork Union Military Academy, where he was noted as an expert pianist, and later attained the status of State Tennis Champion. He followed in his father’s footsteps by attending the Cincinnati School of Embalming and graduated in the fall of 1938. Upon graduation he was allowed to sit for examination by the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers in Dec. 14, 1938. He successfully completed this examination which allowed him to practice as a funeral service professional continuing his father’s business. Almost 40 years later he was called upon by Governor Mills Godwin for an appointment as a member of the Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. The board later elected him him as president. He was a licensed Funeral Director for over 60 years in both Virginia and Tennessee. DuVal was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church, a life member and trustee of the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239, A.F. & A.M., where he was an active member during the construction of its building, and assisted in the preparation of the History Pythagoras Lodge #239.
He was a member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067, a veteran of W.W.II having served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy, president of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce, and a chairman of the Pulaski County Library Board during the construction of its building. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Laura King Harman Seagle, a son, Cloyd DuVal Seagle, Jr., and a grandson, Christopher Harman Bushong, and a brother, Thomas Roswell Seagle. He is survived by one son; Thomas Mason Seagle, II of Pulaski: one daughter; Ruth Seagle Bushong of Dublin, three grandsons; Lee Bushong and Angela Kennedy of Jackson, Wyoming, Jeremiah Seagle and his wife Jamie of Roanoke, and T.M. Seagle, III, and his wife Tonya of Sterling, granddaughter-in-law Mary Bushong of Richmond, and three great-grandchildren, Madison Ruth Bushong, and Catheryne Ann Gambill of Richmond, and Grady Harman Seagle of Roanoke, along with a niece and two nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Melissa McNair-King officiating. Interment will follow in Thornspring Cemetery with Military honors.
