William Henry (Billy) Underwood Jr., 82, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at his residence in Floyd. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Underwood and Ida Marie Lewis Underwood; brother, Kenneth Underwood; and one son. He was a veteran who proudly served his country during the Korean War Conflict. He is survived by his loving companion of 33 years, Dorothy Smith; her sons and their spouses, Robert (Elizabeth) Smith, Randy (Denise) Smith, and Michael (Kathy) Smith; and grandchildren, Brittany, Megan, Brandon, Cody and Brandon. Those left to remember their dear brother are sisters and spouse, Ann U. Palmer, of Riner, Darlene (Carl) Jones, of Christiansburg, and Judy Underwood, of Christiansburg; brothers and their spouses, Ray (Jo) Underwood, of Florida, Melvin (Bertha) Underwood, of Alaska, Freddie (Edith) Underwood, of North Carolina, Dana (Carol Sue) Underwood, of Roanoke, Roger (Pat) Underwood, of Dublin; sister-in-law, Delena Underwood, of Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to friend Steve Angle, who provided transportation for Billy’s numerous trips to the VA Hospital for care. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Lighthouse Ministries, Union Valley Road, Riner, with the Rev. Buford Linkous officiating. Burial will be at a later date in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local volunteer rescue squad or fire department. MY brother, Special, wonderful brother, recall, remembering our childhood days with “precious lasting memories. Remember Billy since 1939, I was age four years. Billy one of seven brothers, three sisters. Billy being special to me, helping to make my life “special, wonderful, joyous in childhood. Miss talking to him by phone often the last year of his life. Billy, thanks you for your Korean war experience, fighting from the Pusan perimeter 1950 to beyond Pyongyang, North Korean capital. Billy serving in A-company, 70th Tank, 5th Regiment, 1st Calvary Division. Waiting for that great day, we shall meet in Heaven, WOW, Billy, love and miss you.
