herring mathews corlissMathews Corliss Herring, 58, of Christiansburg, formerly of Richmond, and Savannah, Ga., died March 15, 2013, at his home surrounded by family and friends following a brief but brave battle with cancer. He worked in international trade as a transportation broker, and was an avid volunteer. Matt was a trivia-guru, animal lover, and active member of his church. He had a passion for food, music, film, and the Redskins. Matt will be most remembered as a good friend, loving Husband and Father, wonderful cook, and for his charitable works with the homeless. He is preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Herring, of Pooler, Ga. He is survived by wife, Margaret C. Herring; and daughter, Meghann Garmany; two sisters; and niece, Kimberly Torek, of Canton, Ga. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at St. Thomas Episcopal in Christiansburg, interment in Savannah, Ga. at a later date.
