Kinder, Rodney Preston

Rodney Preston Kinder, 87, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem. Rodney was born to the late Guy Thomas Kinder and Louella Nye Kinder in Radford, on April 24, 1925.

He attended school in Radford. Upon graduation from Radford High School in 1942, he entered the Coast Guard. He served on the USS Vance DE387 during World War II, making more than 30 round trips from the United States to Europe. After the war, he worked for the N & W Railway and retired after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita Altizer Kinder; sons, Bill N. Kinder and wife, Carole, of Tampa, Fla., Tim Kinder and wife, Lynn, of Newton, N.C.; grandson, Christopher Kinder and wife, Colleen, of Tampa, Fla.; granddaughters, Laura Nye Kinder, of Orlando, Fla., and Adrienne Kinder, of Raleigh, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Emma Kinder, of Tampa, Fla.; and a special niece, Mary Margaret Smith, of Richmond.

Rodney was a member of the Christiansburg Church of Christ. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Payne and special physical therapists, Catie and Kimberly for all of their love and care.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 9, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Christiansburg Church of Christ, with Mr. Dennis Curd and Clarence Lavender officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
