Hopkins, Iva Mary
Iva Mary Hopkins, 83, of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 20, 2013. Born December 1, 1929 in Norfolk, Va., she was a daughter of the late Robert Sidney Barrett and Iva Rawles Barrett of Franklin, Va. She is survived by a sister, Katharine Barrett, of Franklin, Va.; a brother, R. Sidney Barrett, of Raleigh, N.C.; her husband, Mansell H. Hopkins Jr.; four children, M. Herbert Hopkins III, Robert Sidney Hopkins, Barbara H. Brady, and W. Dwight Hopkins; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Hopkins, Krystal Hopkins, Aaron Hopkins, Jessica Hopkins, Garrett Hopkins, Catherine Bennett Nwosu, and Dwight Brady; and one great-grandchild, Jabari Nwosu. She graduated from Carrsville High School in Carrsville, Va. and received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics in 1952 and a M.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition in 1956 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. From 1956 to 1971 she devoted her time to her young family and was employed from 1971 to 1997 as a Registered Dietitian at Community Hospital, Roanoke, VA, Assistant Dietician 1971-74, Radford Community Hospital, Radford, VA, Chief Dietician 1974-79 after which she worked as a Dietetic Consultant at various medical facilities and nursing homes from 1979 to 1997. She was a member of The American Dietetic Association, as well as The Virginia Dietetic Association and served as President VDA in 1993-94, as well as in various boards and committees. She was named the Virginia Distinguished Dietitian of 1996 by VDA. She was a member of Ingles Chapter No. 96. Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron several times. She also served as Grand Representative of that body to Saskatchewan. She was an active member in the Blacksburg Baptist Church and served on many committees including the Board of Deacons. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Blacksburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy McDearis, the Rev. Todd Milsap and Dr. Don McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens of the New River Valley. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9p.m. Wednesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
