Mannon, Carnice Elgin

Carnice Elgin Mannon, of Floyd, was born August 29, 1930 to B. T. and Roxie Mannon in Floyd, Virginia. He died Friday, February 23, 2007, at the age of 76.

Carnice graduated from Floyd High School, then later earned his A. A. degree from Freed-Hardeman College (Henderson, Tennessee), his B. S. from Virginia Polytechnical Institute, and his M. A. in school counseling from East Carolina University.

He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Slusher, on December 26, 1950, and enjoyed a blessed marriage for more than 56 years. They subsequently welcomed three sons and a daughter to their family. He was able to harmonize his love for learning, his love for farming, and his love for God into parallel careers.

He was a school guidance counselor for Carroll County schools for one year, and for Floyd County schools for more than 20 years. He raised cattle and labored on the farm since his youth. He preached the good news of Jesus Christ for almost 60 years, starting churches in Greenville, North Carolina, and Floyd, Virginia. He preached for the Laurel Hill Church of Christ for more than 40 years in his two stints there.

He leaves behind, but waits in anticipation of his wife, Betty; his sister, Josephine Hundley of Knoxville Tennessee; his brother, Howard and his wife Alma of Floyd; his three sons, Lester and his wife Barbara of Floyd, Larry and his wife Jamie of Radford, Dale and his wife Lauri of Lubbock Texas; his daughter Vicki and her husband Keith Morris of Florence Alabama; his eleven grandchildren, Misti and her husband Jared Gardner, Derek Mannon, Callie Morris, Jedidiah Mannon, Logan Morris, Sarah Mannon, Carly Mannon, Jared Mannon, Jordan Mannon, Lindsey Mannon, and Tate Mannon; his two, great-grandchildren, Mallorie and Jonah Gardner; and other extended family and numerous friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday February 26, 2007 at Floyd Church of Christ, with various friends and family members to speak briefly to honor him. Interment will follow at the Mannon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd. Rather than sending flowers, the family asks that you send a living memorial to either the Floyd County Rescue Squad, P.O. The family extends a very special “thank you” to Dr. L.V. Marshall who gave of himself and his time so graciously and selflessly to Carnice and his family, not just as a physician, but also as a friend.
