spangler calvin dCalvin D. (Tom) Spangler, 84, of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 22, 2012. A lifelong resident of Narrows, he was born on June 7, 1928, and was the son of the late Henry Dewey and Nora Ellen Simpkins Spangler. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ivalene Dalton Spangler; and a brother, Eugene Spangler. Tom was involved in many endeavors prior to joining the former First National Bank of Narrows in 1963, later becoming Executive Vice-President of First Virginia Bankshares Corporation, and manager of its Narrows Branch. He treasured his relationships with many former and current bank employees. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows, which was an important part of his life. Tom was a member Intermont Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M., Kazim Shrine Temple, the Narrows Kiwanis Club for over 50 years, and a major supporter of the Narrows Mill Dam renovation project in the late 1980s. He also served on many local and regional advisory boards. But more importantly, Tom had a genuine concern for his family, friends and neighbors. Left to cherish his memory are a son, Calvin D. (Tom) Spangler Jr. and wife, Phyllis, of Narrows; a daughter, Deborah Sparks and husband, Rick, of Pembroke; five grandchildren, Christina Trent and husband, Robert, of Narrows, Larry Spangler, of Roanoke, Laura West and husband, Adam, of Salem, Rick Sparks Jr. and wife, Christy, of Christiansburg, Scott Sparks and fiance, Ashley Whittaker, of Tucson, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren, Lindsey Trent, Grace Trent, Emma Sparks, Andrew Sparks, and Micah West; a sister-in- law, Rheda Wheeler ,of Narrows; several nieces, nephews, cousins; many special friends, including Dr. John Boone, and Carilion Hospice Services; and his many caregivers over the years. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Narrows with Adam West officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Service on Friday, October 26, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church of Narrows, or your favorite charity .
