Kegley, Betty Bunger Bright

Betty Bunger Bright Kegley, 82, of Back Creek in Pulaski County, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. She was born on April 9, 1930, in Augusta County, Va., the youngest daughter of the late Robert Bunger and Mamie Humphrey Bright. Betty was a 1947 graduate of Middlebrook High School and continued her education at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. She worked as a medical lab technician at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton until returning to school and receiving her teaching certificate from Radford University. Betty worked as a 5th grade teacher in Danville, Hampton, Roanoke, and Augusta school systems. After her marriage in 1962, she transitioned her life as a dairy farmer’s wife then a mother and grandmother, first in Verona, then moving in 1967 to the farm in Pulaski County. Betty was actively involved in New Dublin Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years as well as being active in the Women’s Circle and other community activities. She enjoyed playing cards, needlework, reading, and cooking for family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Bright; brothers-in-law, Peyton Hatcher, John Kegley, Tom Kegley, Emmet Ray, and John H. Rubush; and sister-in-law, Ruth Kegley. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 50 years, William Martin Kegley Sr.; her son, Martin Kegley and wife, Lisa, of Pulaski; daughters, Beth and her husband, Tim Johnson, of Springdale, Ark., and Ann and her husband, Jeff Reeves, of Pulaski; grandchildren, Tori and Will Kegley, Sarah and Samuel Johnson, and Emma, Ella, and Eli Reeves; sisters, Virginia and her husband, Jack Foster, of Fairfax, and Millie Hatcher, of Danville; sisters-in-law, Catherine Ray, of Harrisonburg, Nancy Kegley, of McGaheysville, and Mary Ann Rubush, of Mt. Sidney; and a special cousin, Brenda Van Fossen, of Lynchburg. The family gives special thanks to the ladies who cared for her in her later years, especially Sandra Burton, and to Carilion Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pulaski County Library, 60 West 3rd Street, Pulaski, VA 24301 or to the New Dublin Presbyterian Church, 5331 New Dublin Church Road, Dublin, VA 24084. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at New Dublin Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
