John Crawford Lipsey, M.D., of Blacksburg, died on Monday, September 3. Dr. Lipsey was a native of Brookhaven, MS, the son of Crawford Hall Lipsey and Tinye Odom Lipsey. He attended Vanderbilt University and graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1956. Dr. Lipsey interned in San Francisco, CA, and completed his Pediatric residency in New Orleans, LA. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force in SC, beginning the private practice of Pediatrics in Pensacola, FL, in 1961. In 1975, he entered the field of Emergency Medicine in Lexington, KY, and in subsequent years he was an ER physician, Student Health physician at Virginia Tech, a Public Health physician in Virginia and Florida, and lastly, Medical Director at the Radford Arsenal, before retiring in 1994. One sister, Elizabeth Lipsey Kelly, pre-deceased him. His is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lynn Carey Lipsey, and three children: Crawford Carnahan Lipsey (Nancy) of Clarkston, MI; Lisa Hall Lipsey (Sean Distler) of Christiansburg, VA; John Johnson Lipsey, II of Washington, D.C. His five grandchildren are Jessica Lipsey Sapp (Jordan) of Los Angeles, CA; Elizabeth Bryan Lipsey of Winchester, VA; Catherine Carnahan Lipsey of Clarkston, MI; and Ian Michael Lipsey and Bryn Larkin Distler of Christiansburg, VA; and one great-grandchild, Nora Anette Sapp. Memorial service will be held at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 6 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, to the Salvation Army, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
