Heterick, Robert Cary

Robert Cary Heterick, 100, of Blacksburg , born June 13, 1912, son of John Cary Heterick and Elizabeth Bacon Whitehead Heterick, died August 4, 2012. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Class of 1934), Purdue University, and George Washington University. He retired from the federal government as a civil engineer with 30 years service having worked in several agencies, the longest in the United States Air Force where he received five commendations. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Society of American Military Engineers, American Society of Planning Officials and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Falls Church. He lived in Bethesda, Md. and Arlington before moving to Blacksburg in 1968 after his retirement. He resided at Warm Hearth at death. He was an avid golfer and hunter, and had been a member of the National Rifle Association, Shawnee Hunting Club, the Blacksburg Country Club, The University Club and a member and former trustee of St. Peter’s Anglican Catholic Church in Christiansburg. He is predeceased by his wives, Barbara Harrison Heterick (mother of his two children), and Mercedes Verona Smith; and son, Robert C. Heterick Jr. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Heterick Thommen and her husband, George Edward Thommen; daughter-in-law, Mollie Miller Heterick, of Blacksburg; and seven grandchildren, George Edward Thommen Jr., of Lutherville, Md., Karen Thommen Rayburn, of Bel Air, Md., Susan Thommen Curro, Lutherville, Md., Robert Bruce Heterick, of Barrington, R.I., Dawn Heterick Werner, of Bluff City, Tenn., Paige Heterick Walters, of Blacksburg, and Rebecca Heterick Scott, of Blacksburg. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. September 29, 2012, at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with interment at Westview Cemetery in Blacksburg.
