lawrence virginia dealVirginia Deal Lawrence, of Christiansburg, passed away on July 9, 2012, at Warm Hearth Kroontje Health Care Center. She was born February 28, 1909, and was the daughter of the late James Lewis Lawrence and Fannie Deal Smith Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Eileen Houston. She is survived by devoted cousins and their spouses, Linda Lightfoot and husband, Rob, of Nicholasville, Ky., Phyllis McLeod and husband Ronnie, of Leesburg, Margaret Deal Sears and husband, Joe, of Potomac, Md., Wayman Lawrence and wife, Joan, of Galena, Ohio, Peggy Lawrence Simmons, of Midland, Texas; and dear friends, Pat and Kathy Smith, of Riner.

She received her degree from Radford College in 1930, and taught in Newport for one year and 42 years in the school at Riner. In 1970, she was selected to appear in the edition of “Outstanding Educators of America.” Virginia Deal was a loyal member of Auburn United Methodist Church at Riner where she taught the Kindergarten Class for many years, served as Church Historian, Communion Steward, and Treasurer of the Lord’s Acre for 38 years. She was a member of the Auburn United Methodist Women and served as Treasurer for many years. She was a charter member of Alpha Theta Chapter of Tri Sigma and a charter member of Alpha Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma serving as Treasurer for 35 years.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Wilks, of Auburn United Methodist Church and Dr. David Goodpasture officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
