hickman james eJames E. Hickman entered into eternal rest May 24, 2012. He was a Christian warrior, a devoted husband and father. James was born August 20, 1927, to the late David Hickman and Theodosia Long Hickman in Radford. He was the youngest of three brothers, which all preceded him in death. He was married for 61 years to Cordelia Akers Hickman, Radford. To this union two daughters were born, namely Sheila Hickman Grant and Sherry Hickman Price. James embraced Christianity at an early age and joined First Baptist Church, Radford after marriage and serving in the United States Navy. During his commitment to God and First Baptist, he served in various leadership capacities, including Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, Trustees, and Deacon. James’s most prolific vision was to build a new church home for First Baptist Church on Rock Road, Radford. James along with the Trustee Board and other parishioners celebrated God’s grace and that goal in May, 2011. James worked at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, Lynchburg Foundry and retired from the United States Postal Service after 25 years. James was very active in community affairs, serving on various committees, such as the 21st Century Committee, Radford City Planning Commission, Habitat for Humanities, and the Radford City Beautification Committee. During his service with Habitat, he had the honor of meeting and working with President Jimmy Carter and Former Ambassador Andrew Young. James was an entrepreneur as he owned and operated businesses in Radford. He was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and NAACP. James is survived by his wife, Cordelia Akers Hickman; daughters, Sheila Hickman Grant (Greg), Richmond and Sherry Hickman Price (Tony), Pinehurst, N.C.; son, Christopher Lewis (Cheryl); grandchildren, Anthony Price (Pamela), Jason Price, Christopher Lewis, and Casey Lewis; great-granddaughter Kylie Madison Price; and several nieces and nephews; and many devoted friends and family members. Special thanks to Wheatland Hills Assisted Living, Radford, for their care and comfort of James. Visitation for James will be Sunday, May 27, 2012, at 2 p.m., and the funeral will be at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 555 West Rock Road, Radford, VA 24141, with the Rev. Corwin Casey officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Burial Park, Radford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church at the address above. Arrangements by DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.
