perkins amos elmoreAmos Elmore Perkins, 81, of Pembroke, surrounded by his family at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, left his earthly home and arrived in Heaven on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Amos was born on May 16, 1930, in Ripplemead, and was raised on Guinea Mountain. His parents are the late Maggie Riggs and Robert Lee Perkins. Amos was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude and Elsie; and nine brothers, Eugene, Courtland, Edward, Johnny, Robert (Junior), Herbert, Carroll and Charles (Buddy). He married the love of his life, June Tabor, on May 3, 1950. He is survived by one sister, Leoma Perkins Rock; his wife of nearly 62 years, June Perkins; sons, Wayne and wife, Linda Perkins, David and wife, Barbara Perkins; and grandsons, Derek, Kevin and Brandon. Amos was a lifetime member of the Christian faith. He started out attending the Mt. View Methodist on Guinea Mountain, with many fond memories. He then attended Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke, where in the past he served as deacon and caretaker of the church. Amos worked and retired from the Giles County Public School System. In his younger days he was an avid rabbit and squirrel hunter, and raised beagle hunting dogs. He was a hard worker often working two jobs to give his family a better life. He traveled most of the United States, but as he would say, “I don’t want to go, I just go with June”. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, in the Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke, with the Rev. Fed Austin and the Rev. Gary Poff officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson-Mt. View Cemetery on Guinea Mountain. The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Anderson-Mt View Cemetery in care of Dixie Albert, 2526 Guinea Mountain Road, Pearisburg, VA 24134.Funeral arrangements are with the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke.
