jervey thora jo thompsonThora Jo Thompson Jervey, of Radford, died January 31, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ed; three sons, David, Warren, and Tom; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Phillips Jervey; and three grandchildren, Katie, Brett, and Peyton. Born in 1929, Thora spent most of her childhood in southern California. She graduated from Whittier College in 1951, and married Ed that same summer. After living in California and Tennessee, she and Ed moved to Radford in 1961. In Radford, Thora founded the recycling movement, the clothing bank, Books for Babies, and by starting a weekly newspaper column “The Lamplighter”, was one of the three people responsible for the building of the beautiful library. Injured in an auto accident in 1998, Thora never let her handicap get her down, and continued to travel throughout the world, playing bridge, and going to meetings. She was always part of the Clothing Bank Board and a member of Grove United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held later. In lieu of any flowers, Thora always requested that money be sent to the Radford Public Library or the Radford Clothing Bank in her memory.
