ashe betty tuellBetty Ann Tuell Ashe, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 9, 2012, in the English Meadows Assisted Living facility, Christiansburg, Va. Betty was born in Smyth County, Va., on October 14, 1940, to the late John Robert Tuell and Annie Thompson Tuell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Joseph Ashe; four sisters, Josephine Miller, Ella Mae Bales, Aileen Guy and Lucy Barker; and a brother, John T. Tuell. Betty was a long time member of Abingdon Baptist Church and was retired from the Washington County Virginia School System with 24 years of service. Betty had a fascination with raising an assortment of flowers and cultivating an annual vegetable garden of which she was very proud. Betty often would be found doing housework as she was listening to country music and gospel hymns and occasionally attended concerts performed by her favorite artists. Trips to the Western United States with Hubert, Emily and Fred were entertaining along with numerous annual excursions to the family cabin in Gatlinburg, Tenn., were important throughout the years. Baking, cooking and organizing family holidays and get-togethers brought joy to Betty’s life. Without question the crowning jewel of her existence was spending time with her husband, three children, in-laws and grandchildren as she participated in functions and provided unconditional love and support to everyone. Surviving Betty includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Beth Ashe, of Blacksburg, Va., and Terry and Tracy Ashe, of Seymour, Tenn.; one daughter and son- in-law, Laura and Lewis Ashwell, of Roanoke, Va.; and five grandchildren, Brittany Ashe, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Taylor Ashe, of Blacksburg, Va., Whitney Ashe and Corey Ashe, both of Seymour Tenn., and Hunter Ashwell, of Roanoke, Va. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in- law, Fred and Emily Oakley, of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Kathleen Walton, and Mary and Jim Cook ,all of Chilhowie, Va.; one brother and sister-in- law, Robert “Bobby” Tuell and Janie Tuell, of Saltville, Va.; lifelong friend, Beulah Shelton Vannoy, of Meadowview, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. The family would like to recognize the extraordinary care of Betty during her illness, provided by English Meadows Assisted Living of Christiansburg, Va. Administrator April Hutton; Director of Nursing Cyndi Miller; Mary Ballengee, Ericka Creasey, Jessica Moore, Sue Buchanan, Amanda Johnston, Ashley Lafferty, Nakesha Maxey, Janet Hostetter, Monica Heath, Christine Marshall and Ed Keogh, for their unconditional love and support since June of 2010; and Drs. Gregory C. Beato and Michael J. Payne for providing phenomenal medical knowledge and care over the last several years, we thank you. Honorary Pallbearers include Taylor Ashe, Corey Ashe, Larry Jenkins, Eddie Guy, David Kiser, Roger Kiser, Danny Walton, Kenny Guy, Jonathan Gwinn and Garnett Patton. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, January 12, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, Va. Funeral Services to follow at 8 p.m. on Thursday with Dr. Jack Garland officiating. The Committal Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012, in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Va., with the Rev. John E. Massey Jr. officiating.
