Elgert, Adam
Adam Elgert, of Blacksburg, Va., went to his heavenly home on Monday, January 2, 2012, at his residence in Showalter Assisted Living Center with his wife at his side. Adam was born on September 13, 1926 in Germany to the late Adam Elgert, Sr. and Jakobine (Flemke) Elgert. He was next-to-the-youngest of seven siblings, who are all deceased. Adam is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irmgard Eva (Christowzik) Elgert. He graduated from trade school with honors after completing studies in sheet metal fabrication and machine tooling. Shortly after his graduation at age 16, he was drafted into the German Army during World War II where he served as an engineer. After being discharged from the army in 1945, he worked in areas related to his trade school training. He took the opportunity in 1951 to immigrate to the United States with his wife, Irmgard and two children, Klaus and Margitta, initially residing in Philadelphia, Pa.; in 1956 the family moved to Langhorne, Pa., where three more children, Barbara, Peter, and Katie were born. He joined his immigration sponsor’s industrial sheet metal business in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1951, several years later he became a business partner, and a few years later he became the owner. Adam, Irmgard, Klaus, and Margitta proudly received their U.S. citizenship in 1963. After a successful tenure as head of his company, he retired and moved to Florida with his wife. They moved to Warm Hearth Village, Blacksburg, in 2000. Adam and his wife were devoted members of the Blacksburg Wesleyan Community Church. Adam Elgert is survived by his five children, son Klaus D. Elgert and wife, Kathleen, of Blacksburg; daughter, Margitta Pfleger and husband, Glenn (deceased), of West Lawn, Pa.; daughter, Barbara Plemmons and husband, Rick, of Memphis, Tn.; son Peter Elgert and wife Susan, of Quakertown, Pa.; and daughter, Katie Perkins and husband, Joseph, of Langhorne, Pa.; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Tony Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at McCoy Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held in Pennsylvania at the convenience of the family.
